When summer arrives and the sun is shining, most of us reach for the sunscreen. But how many people actually know what those numbers on the bottle mean? SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor, and it’s one of the most important indicators of how well your skin is protected from the sun’s harmful rays. Yet, there are still plenty of misconceptions about how SPF works and how to use sunscreen effectively. Here’s a guide to understanding what SPF really means and how to make the most of your sun protection.

What Is SPF?

SPF measures how much longer you can stay in the sun before your skin starts to burn compared to if you weren’t wearing sunscreen. For example, if your skin would normally start to burn after 10 minutes without protection, an SPF 30 sunscreen theoretically allows you to stay in the sun 30 times longer—about 300 minutes—before burning. In reality, though, the level of protection depends on how much sunscreen you apply, how often you reapply, and how strong the sun’s rays are.

It’s important to know that SPF only measures protection against UVB rays—the ones that cause sunburn. To protect your skin from UVA rays, which contribute to premature aging and skin cancer, look for a sunscreen labeled “broad spectrum.” This ensures you’re covered against both types of harmful ultraviolet radiation.

How High an SPF Should You Choose?

Many people assume that SPF 50 offers twice the protection of SPF 25, but the difference is smaller than you might think. SPF 15 blocks about 93% of UVB rays, SPF 30 blocks about 97%, and SPF 50 blocks around 98%. The key is not just the number—it’s how you use it.

For everyday activities, dermatologists in the U.S. generally recommend using at least SPF 30. If you’re spending extended time outdoors, at the beach, or at higher altitudes, go for SPF 50 or higher. Children, people with fair skin, or those with a history of skin cancer should always use a higher SPF and take extra precautions.

How Much Sunscreen Do You Need?

One of the biggest mistakes people make is not using enough sunscreen. To get the full protection listed on the label, you need about one ounce—roughly a shot glass full—for your entire body. Most adults apply only half that amount, which significantly reduces the level of protection.

Apply sunscreen 15–30 minutes before going outside, and reapply every two hours—or more often if you’re swimming, sweating, or towel-drying. Even “water-resistant” sunscreens lose effectiveness after about 40 to 80 minutes in the water, depending on the product.

Sun Protection Is More Than Sunscreen

While sunscreen is essential, it’s only one part of a smart sun protection strategy. You can also protect yourself by:

  • Seeking shade between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun’s rays are strongest.
  • Wearing protective clothing, such as long sleeves, wide-brimmed hats, and UV-blocking sunglasses.
  • Avoiding tanning beds, which expose your skin to concentrated UV radiation.
  • Checking the UV Index in your area—when it’s 3 or higher, you need sun protection.

Combining these habits can dramatically reduce your risk of sunburn, premature aging, and skin cancer.

Common Myths About Sunscreen

There are plenty of myths about sunscreen that can lead to poor protection. Here are a few of the most common:

  • “I won’t get a tan if I wear sunscreen.” You’ll still tan—just more gradually and safely. Sunscreen doesn’t block all UV rays; it helps prevent damage while allowing a healthy glow to develop over time.

  • “I only need sunscreen when it’s hot or sunny.” UV rays penetrate clouds and can cause skin damage even on cool or overcast days.

  • “I put sunscreen on this morning, so I’m covered all day.” Sunscreen wears off with time, sweat, and friction. Reapply regularly to stay protected.

Make Sun Protection a Daily Habit

Protecting yourself from the sun isn’t about avoiding it—it’s about enjoying it safely. Make sunscreen part of your daily routine, just like brushing your teeth. Keep a travel-size bottle in your bag or car so you can reapply whenever you’re outdoors.

Your skin remembers every bit of sun exposure over your lifetime. By practicing consistent sun protection, you’re investing in your long-term health and keeping your skin looking its best for years to come.
