In Italy, the company Orange Fiber has developed a process to extract cellulose from the remains of citrus fruits left over after juice production. The cellulose is spun into fine threads that can be woven into a smooth, silk-like fabric.
The result resembles viscose but is far more sustainable, since it uses a waste product instead of newly harvested trees. Luxury fashion houses have already incorporated citrus-based textiles into their collections, proving that sustainability and elegance can go hand in hand.
Coffee Grounds – From Morning Brew to Activewear
Coffee grounds are another surprising source of raw material making their way into clothing. The Taiwanese company Singtex has created a fabric that blends microscopic coffee particles with recycled polyester. The result is a material that not only reuses waste but also offers natural benefits: it dries quickly, neutralizes odors, and provides UV protection.
Several sports and outdoor brands have adopted this coffee-based fabric for their apparel lines. It’s a perfect example of how technology and creativity can turn something as ordinary as used coffee grounds into a functional, eco-friendly textile.
Algae – The Ocean’s Green Gold
The ocean is also contributing to the future of sustainable fashion. Scientists have long explored algae as a source for bioplastics and cosmetics, and now it’s being used to make textiles. One example is the German material SeaCell, which combines cellulose with powdered seaweed. The fabric is soft, breathable, and rich in minerals that, according to producers, may even have a soothing effect on the skin.
Algae grow quickly, require no farmland, and can be cultivated without freshwater—qualities that make them an ideal resource in a world where efficiency and conservation are increasingly important.
A New Aesthetic for Sustainable Fashion
These new materials aren’t just about environmental impact—they’re also reshaping fashion’s aesthetic. Citrus fibers create a glossy, elegant finish; coffee-based fabrics have a matte, natural texture; and algae-derived textiles offer a soft, organic feel.
